New Toll Policy 2025

In order to help commuters on national highways, the Indian government is now drafting a unified New Toll Policy 2025. This project aims to solve current issues that highway users experience and standardize toll collection procedures. According to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways plans to implement a barrier-free toll collection system based on the Global Navigation Satellite System. This state-of-the-art solution is expected to speed up toll operations and enhance the overall user experience on national routes. 

The toll policy in the state of Punjab has been set up to guarantee efficiency and transparency in toll collection. With provisions for yearly modifications based on the Wholesale Price Index , the policy specifies precise toll prices for different vehicle classifications. The policy contains fines to deter overloading and toll evasion, which encourages compliance with rules. In order to ensure that commuters are aware of the toll rates and any applicable discounts, the policy also requires that toll plazas clearly display toll prices and related information.

GNSS-Powered Toll Gathering The government intends to replace the current RFID-based FASTag tolling system with a GNSS-based one. The GNSS system will enable the automatic deduction of toll rates based on the distance traveled, in contrast to FASTag, which mandates that cars slow down at toll booths. This technique will ensure smooth toll payments without stopping at plazas by using satellites to track vehicles.

System of Distance-Based Tolling

Because tolls are now collected at fixed toll plazas, drivers frequently pay for portions of the roadway that they do not use completely. The process will be more equitable and economical for road users under the new system, which would tax drivers according to the precise distance they travel on a toll road.

Removal of Actual Toll Booths

The progressive elimination of actual toll booths is one of the new policy’s most important features. By eliminating the need for cars to stop or slow down in order to pay for tolls, satellite-based toll collection will improve traffic flow and cut down on travel time.

Government Plans For Tolls In 2025

Approximately 13,000 km of roadway projects will be awarded by the government this fiscal year, up from 8,580.5 km in FY 2023–2024. However, the Bharatmala Pariyojana scheme’s lack of a substitute has caused project approvals to go more slowly.

Launched in 2017, the Bharatmala Pariyojana seeks to increase connectivity by building 34,800 km of new roads throughout India. Over 26,400 km of projects have been awarded under the plan so far, and 18,700 km have been finished.

However, Gadkari pointed out a problem with the approval procedure for big projects: projects costing more than Rs 1,000 crore now need Cabinet approval, which has caused certain initiatives to be delayed. According to him, projects totaling between Rs 50,000 and Rs 60,000 crore are presently for Cabinet approval.
